🐱 I Found a Friendly Cat or Kittens
If you've found a friendly stray cat, an abandoned cat or kittens that appear to need rescue, start with the Rescues & Shelters section below.
Contact several organizations. Foster-based rescues often have limited space, especially during kitten season.
When contacting a rescue, include:
Your location
How many cats or kittens need help
Approximate ages
Whether they are friendly or feral
Whether anyone is injured or sick
How long you've been caring for them
Whether you can temporarily foster them
Clear photos, if possible
Offering to foster the cat or kittens yourself may greatly increase the chance that a rescue can help.
🍼 I Found Kittens — What Should I Do?
Don't automatically assume kittens have been abandoned.
If the kittens are warm, clean, quiet and appear well-fed, their mother may be nearby. Mother cats frequently leave their kittens temporarily to find food.
Observe from a safe distance when possible.
Get help immediately if:
The kittens are cold or unresponsive
They are continuously crying
They appear injured
They are extremely thin or dehydrated
They are covered in fleas or fly eggs
Their mother is known to be injured or deceased
They appear to be in immediate danger

🌳 Outdoor, Feral or Community Cats
A healthy outdoor cat that is fearful of people may not need to be removed from its environment.
For community cats, Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR/TNR) is often the most effective long-term solution.
TNR organizations may be able to help with:
Humane trapping
Spay/neuter
Vaccinations
Colony management
Community-cat resources
Identifying friendly cats or kittens that may be candidates for rescue

If you already own or care for the cat and need help with spay/neuter, basic veterinary services or resources that may help you keep your pet, check Low-Cost Spay/Neuter & Pet Support.
Keeping an animal safely in its existing home whenever possible leaves limited rescue space available for animals with nowhere else to go.
Before Contacting a Rescue
You can help rescues respond more efficiently by providing complete information in your first message.
Include:
Location: Where is the cat currently located?
Number of Cats: One cat, a litter, a mother with kittens or an entire colony?
Age: Give your best estimate.
Temperament: Friendly, shy, fearful or feral?
Medical Condition: Any visible wounds, eye discharge, respiratory symptoms, diarrhea, difficulty walking or other concerns?
Current Safety: Is the animal safely contained?
Foster Ability: Can you temporarily house the cat while a rescue provides veterinary care and searches for an adopter?
Photos: Include clear photos whenever possible.
Contact More Than One Organization
Rescues throughout Western Pennsylvania operate independently.
One organization being full does not necessarily mean another organization cannot help.
When appropriate, contact several organizations from this directory rather than waiting for a response from only one.
Please be courteous when contacting rescue volunteers. Many organizations are operated entirely by volunteers who are simultaneously caring for animals, coordinating veterinary appointments, reviewing applications, fundraising and responding to requests for help.
